FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How much can my Chinese really improve?
The intensive individual course with 30 hours of 1-on-1 Mandarin tuition is the fastest way to learn Mandarin in Taiwan there is.
Don’t get us wrong, studying six hours of individual Chinese classes is intense. However, studying hard does get you results and your Mandarin will progress very quickly – especially when combined with living in a homestay.
While everyone is different in general for a complete beginner to achieve full fluency (about HSK / TOCFL level 5 or 6) takes usually a bit less than a year. For a more basic understanding, to get to a level where you can travel around Taiwan or mainland China, order food, buy train tickets and handle day to day life in Mandarin takes about two to four weeks. Again living with a homestay will speed up the process.
The standard individual course with 20 hours of 1-on-1 Mandarin classes per week will also get you ahead very quickly, however of course the intensive one delivers faster Chinese language progress.
Which is better, individual or group classes?
This depends very much on you.
In general individual classes are faster, however they also cost more than small group classes.
For beginners often small group Mandarin classes work quite well, however the higher your Chinese level is, the more specific your needs will be.
For example, with a strong imbalance in your reading and speaking abilities, individual classes or a combination of individual and small group classes can be more useful.
While individual classes are faster for students at any level, we definitely recommend for anyone who is TOCFL 4 / HSK 4 or higher to take only individual classes. This is because at the higher levels even in our very small group classes with only an average of three students per class the differences in the challenges students face become too big.
Depending on how Mandarin language students learned Mandarin previously, some might read very well, but struggle with speaking while others can express themselves without problems but are far behind with their characters. This results in a small group class being either too hard or too easy – depending on whether characters or speaking are taught.
You will be able to learn with native Taiwanese Mandarin speakers also meaning you’ll learn traditional Chinese.
What exactly is the assessment?
Before you start your 1-on-1 Mandarin course in Taiwan with us we will do an online language assessment with you to find out about your current Chinese level, areas you are struggling in and what you would want to focus on.
This is usually done via Skype, WhatsApp, WeChat or phone and typically lasts about 15-20 minutes.
Do not worry, this is not an exam, but just to help us to prepare properly for your course before you come to Taipei.
Will I be able to meet other students?
Yes, absolutely. Even though you will not have any classmates studying in the same course as you, you will quickly meet the other LTL students during breaks, school lunches and our school events.
We are a very tight community here and while it is of course up to each person how much they want to participate in the school’s social life, life-long friendships are made between students, staff and teachers all the time.
How does the admin work?

I highly recommend individual classes. All my teachers were very willing to engage and the fact I had a teacher who helped teach my medical terms (my field of work) was absolutely ideal.
I was very satisfied with my teachers and found both the classes and the school very professionally and well organized. I hope I can come back for another course at LTL later this year.
With Ehana we were going through textbooks at the start. We'd go through a chapter each time and grammar. After this we would use the vocabulary to create a story.
The teacher was an experienced teacher who came prepared every day, genuinely interested in my ability to learn, paced the progress perfectly. I can’t recommend LTL any more highly
The teachers are all really well trained in teaching Mandarin to foreigners, and friendly and fun too. My teachers never spoke English is lessons, but tried to expand my vocabulary...
I heard that LTL has different branches. LTL was also one of the first four links on Google. Alex replied in the same day. Teachers have their own different styles.
I googled around to find the ideal Mandarin school for me and eventually landed with LTL given their strong set of reviews online and their easy to navigate website.
This was my first trip to Taiwan and getting round was a bit tricky at first compared to Vancouver where all the roads are straight and flat! The heat is also different but my homestay were really kind and gave my a UV umbrella, that helped a lot and I really appreciated it.
The weather (July) has been rainy but very humid so I would advise a backpack that protects against the rain and not to bother with long sleeved clothing!
Mandarin Classes at LTL
Rachel and her teacher at LTL Taiwan
I studied 1-on-1 Chinese for four weeks in total. I had two teachers for the first two weeks.
This was a very good idea because I could bounce the same questions off them both but get different perspectives. My teacher switched after week 2 but that went smoothly and everything was comfortable.
I highly recommend individual classes.
All my teachers were very willing to engage and the fact I had a teacher who helped teach my medical terms (my field of work) was absolutely ideal. The textbooks we used were great and overall the class was very good.
My initial interview with Annie (pre-course assessment) was really good. She was really professional and made me feel very relaxed.
Taiwan was great and the MRT is fantastic, much better than Vancouver. I will come back to Taiwan in the future.

One on One Classes at LTL School
This is the last week of my standard individual course at LTL. I was very satisfied with my teachers and found both the classes and the school very professionally and well organized. I made great progress with my Mandarin during the course and really enjoyed the school activities, especially the BBQ at Andreas’ house. Everyone at the school is very friendly and I felt very comfortable during my time here.
I hope I can come back for another course at LTL later this year.

I found LTL via Google. I liked that the website was detailed, and that there was a Homestay. Information was laid out neatly and there were lots of resources. Super helpful.

I had two teachers at LTL Taiwan, Ehana & Julia.
With Ehana we were going through textbooks at the start. We’d go through a chapter each time and grammar. After this we would use the vocabulary from each section of the book to create a story. It was a good way of practicing writing formal sentence.
Then she would read something out to me and I would summarize it in different words.
We would also do a discussion for the last bit.
With Julia we would do a listening exercise with blanks that I fill out. We go through a bunch of different exercises that are harder than the book.
We would go over some vocabulary that she would test me which included writing on a certain topic. All the practices are really good.
I am planning on doing Online Class with LTL. If I come back, I’d maybe do 6 hours per day. I want to get through the Remembering Hanzi book.

Having never taken a formal mandarin course, I was a bit apprehensive about taking an intensive Mandarin course. I really had no idea whether the quality of the teacher or the quality of the course materials would meet my expectations.
Andy Liu and his teacher in Taiwan
That being said, I decided to give it a shot with LTL and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. The teacher was an experienced teacher who came prepared every day, demonstrated strong competency in teaching Mandarin, genuinely interested in my ability to learn, paced the progress not too fast and not too slow, and made the learning process enjoyable.
Four hours a day seems like a long time, but it went by very quickly because of the rapport I had with the instructor. Because I was also hoping to personalize the experience beyond just the coursework, my teacher also assisted me in learning my business presentations in Mandarin. This was very helpful and even though it was a bit outside her profession, she was very eager to assist. There is no doubt that my reading, listening, and speaking improved quite a bit. I attended several dinners and meetings throughout my time in Taipei and I felt my ability to communicate improved significantly. My family and friends also mentioned, without my prompting, that my Mandarin improved immensely. I can’t recommend LTL any more highly.

I am an Economics PhD student in the UK conducting research with a partial focus on China. I have previously lived in China and studied Mandarin in my spare time since, but wanted to push my language skills to a higher level and be able to discuss more technical topics relating to my PhD research. I therefore decided to spend some of my summer this year studying part-time in Beijing.
LTL Students studying Chinese
Having previously studied Mandarin in a range of environments, I was careful to ensure I would get the most out of my lesson time in Beijing. I have had some fairly inefficient studying experiences, getting stuck in large classes or without teachers who really understood how to teach Mandarin as a foreign language, and really wanted to avoid these. I chose LTL because of their flexibility and their reputation for teaching students at an advanced level. I’m really happy I did so. The teachers are all really well trained in teaching Mandarin to foreigners, and friendly and fun too. My teachers never spoke English is lessons, but tried to expand my vocabulary by explaining everything slowly and clearly in Chinese. They all have really good standardised accents, and strong English skills. They developed a tailored curriculum for me discussing news articles related to the topics I requested. After six weeks I feel like I have become a lot more confident in speaking and writing, and am far more fluent in discussing the economy/global affairs in Chinese now. I have also witnessed how fast new students learn at LTL – and wish I had started off this way.
The school is also a really nice community, and so I felt like I had a network of friends in Beijing from studying there. Overall I would recommend LTL for those looking to improve their Mandarin quickly or to push through their fluency ceiling and get to an advanced level. Even though it’s a bit more expensive, it’s worth the premium for the speed at which you will improve.

How I found LTL
I was searching for a Chinese school, originally in Mainland, but I wanted to look for alternatives to compare. I heard that LTL has different branches. LTL was also one of the first four links when searching on Google.
Alex replied in the same day, so that was good.
My Teachers
My teachers were Peinie on Monday-Wednesday-Friday and Jassie on Tuesday-Thursday. They have their own different styles.
With Peinie we covered one chapter per day in main textbook, and Jassie gave me a grammar textbook, we also covered that as well with Peinie.
On the first class Jassie asked if want to know more about Taiwan culture. She would present extra information, such as on Taiwan weddings and Chinese New Year etc, this was really quite nice.
For almost every class, Jassie would prepare a PPT on grammar and on culture, so very impressive and nice.
Both teachers were excellent, we for hotpot together and I also went with Jassie to her home to see her cats, because I love cats. They were very welcoming, so not strictly teacher and student when in the same company.
I really love Taiwan, the people are cheerful and nice. Even if really crowded in metro, the people don’t really push. This is great and more relaxing than other cities. The air is clean which is also another positive.
I would love to come back to Taiwan if I have the opportunity.
Immersion is the best way to enhance your Mandarin proficiency. You will start your program and build your Chinese in Taipei before moving to Chengde afterwards.
